Windows 7 backup programs. Backup the smart way. Choosing the right information backup program. Limitations of the free version

Content

People who actively work at a computer, regardless of their age, social status and area of professional activity, actively use a wide variety of electronic documents. The programmer creates the source code for the programs, the secretary types out orders and memos, and the photographer processes his photographs. Even a small, unintelligent child has a lot of important documents on his computer - game save files.

Documents that took months or years of painstaking work to create can be lost in a matter of seconds, and this can happen at any time, for reasons beyond your control. Restoring important data takes a lot of effort, time, and health. Unfortunately, most often, the user begins to think about creating backup copies only after losing valuable information.

A smart and inexpensive way to protect your important data from destruction is to perform regular backups. For such purposes, there are special programs that take care of the safety of information.

This guide will look at programs that allow you to operate with folders and specific files. The general principle of work for all review participants is identical - you create a task in which you include the most important documents, and then plan a schedule for its launch. You can read about the features of the programs in the text of the guide.

After the first start of the program, you are greeted by a Wizard who offers to immediately organize a backup project.

During the first step, you enter a project name, after which you proceed to the procedure for specifying the files and folders involved in the backup. You can set separate filtering rules for file lists so that you don't have to specify each item individually. As a next step, you can specify exclusion rules. This list filtering system allows you to flexibly specify which specific files need to be archived. For example, excluding files with the *.bak extension from backup can be considered a very logical solution.

The next step is to specify the location of the archive files. You can specify not only the local file system, but also FTP resources, local network, and optical drive partition. The last solution is not entirely intuitive. Yes, the program allows you to create backup copies on CD and DVD media. In such cases, this is emphasized by a separate group of options that ensure correct configuration of the drive operation.

After selecting the backup purpose, you are asked to configure additional program options. And finally, during the last step of the Wizard, you can familiarize yourself with all the items of the current project, after which the program will recommend creating a separate shortcut responsible for calling the current document. As mentioned earlier, the program does not have its own scheduler, and backups can only be started manually, unless you resort to third-party products.

You can add new files to the project at any time, change the current rules and filters. In addition, there is a separate group of options, the controls of which apply to all opened projects.

Firstly, you can choose a compression algorithm for archive files. You can choose a ZIP archiver, but this sets a limit on the archive size, 2GB. Using the CAB format allows you to remove this limitation. The archive can be self-extracting, access to it can be protected with a password, and encryption can also be used.

Active Backup Expert Pro has built-in tools for creating a remote connection with your provider. Backup files can be transferred offline via modem.

The program contains quite powerful data backup mechanisms, but its concept itself is not entirely familiar; it goes against the traditional structure of products of this class.

Backup4all successfully combines broad functionality and ease of use. Creating new backup projects is carried out using a Wizard, which breaks down all operations into several steps. Inside the application's working window, you can view the tree structure of the current project, highlighting the various states of files - changed, new, excluded, and others. As predefined examples, you are offered a backup of the My Documents and My Pictures folders, as well as Internet Explorer Favorites.

All tasks can be represented in a tree structure based on groups. By default, you only have one Samples element. If you create additional task groups, their list will be displayed at the top/bottom of the sidebar. Just click on the element's title to switch to the current group.

Creating a new backup task begins by specifying its name, selecting a group, and a unique icon. You are also given the opportunity to immediately select a set of predefined settings. Each task can be accompanied by a text description.

You can specify a local file system, network, or FTP server as the backup destination. If you are going to store copies on hard drives, you must additionally specify the destination folder. However, you can immediately select the logical drive of the optical drive, after which the program will offer to specify several additional options unique to burning discs. Backup4all uses its own module that works with burner drives. It is possible to specify an arbitrary recording speed, and the ability to force rewritable disks to be cleared before recording. You can also use the UDF file system in combination with DirectCD/InCD, which makes it possible to transparently add files to media, without the hassle of creating new sessions or importing old data. Using FTP as a backup destination allows you to connect to servers directly or through a proxy, using authentication, SLL encryption. You can strictly limit the speed of receiving and uploading data.

Backup can be of four types - full, incremental, differential, and mirror creation. Depending on the percentage of differences between the current backup and the original archive, the program can automatically replace intelligent backup methods by creating a full copy. Backup4all supports several archive encryption methods, and also allows you to block access to the backup with a password.

If you selected several folders when specifying the source files to be backed up, then most likely not all of the data needs to be saved. You can work with two types of filters – include and exclude. As a result, unique rules for including and excluding files can be specified depending on the specific situation.

The next step allows you to describe some additional aspects of the backup procedure. For example, what criterion should be used to determine whether a file has changed or not? The program allows you to select many parameters for assessing the state of the data. Various file system attributes, checksum, indexing, and many other parameters can act as factors that determine whether a file has changed or not. The backup may be associated with some third-party action, such as launching an application. Backup4all offers to assign similar actions to be performed before and after the backup. The completion of a task can be accompanied by sound signals, as well as sending a completion notification to an arbitrary email address.

And finally, the last stage of the Wizard’s work is a description of the scheduler’s work. Backup4all allows you to use the built-in Windows tool, but also has its own scheduler. The program has a large number of options for backup scheduling rules. For example, a workstation may wait for a period of low CPU usage to complete a task with minimal disruption to system operation. Another example is that if the program detects that the computer is not running on electricity, but on batteries, then creating a backup copy must be postponed.

Any project can be saved to your hard drive as a separate shortcut. For example, you decide to use the built-in scheduler. When setting up the task, specify the Backup4all project shortcut to run. When an event occurs, the scheduler will automatically call a third-party backup tool.

The program allows you to clearly monitor the backup status. Using a group of filters located on the toolbar, you can specify criteria for the displayed data, which allows you to visually track all file changes. Backup4all can display detailed statistics for each project, as well as export data to CSV files.

Before restoring data, you can specify specific versions of files, and also perform unpacking into an arbitrary directory (not on top of the original data).

Backup4all has one interesting feature called One Touch Backup. Its essence lies in the program’s ability to detect connected USB devices and, if successful, immediately offer to start a backup. In the program settings, you just need to specify the source folder or select a predefined task. The backup is started with one click, hence the name - “backup at the first touch”.

Backup4all has high-quality localization, which allows the program to be used even by those who are not familiar with the English language. This program cannot be called the most powerful and functional in the entire market sector. Backup4all is aimed at those who value not only broad functionality, but also ease of use. You can flexibly change the appearance of Backup4all (customize panels, change their layouts) based on your own preferences. This may not be so important for a program that performs backups, but even when performing purely technical operations, you want not to lose beauty, convenience, and clarity. With Backup4all you can back up in comfort.

PC backup software is necessary because the technology that computers use, especially for data storage, is not super reliable and does not last forever. If your data was not backed up at the time of the failure or serious breakdown, then you may lose it.

It would be nice if Microsoft itself provided Windows users with something like Apple's Time Machine: an efficient solution for complete system recovery and backup that requires little interaction or configuration on the user's part.

Instead, the company ships a variety of recovery options: disk recovery, file backup, and even incomplete system backup (Windows 7). Online backup services are another option for creating backups, but desktop clients tend to offer much more flexibility. Online backup services are another option, but desktop clients tend to offer much more flexibility.

There are many options for backing up your device. Read on for an analysis of the programs.

What to look for when choosing backup software

Don't buy too much; if you choose software with functions that you don't plan to use, this can lead to unnecessary load on the system and a decrease in its performance. If you plan to copy information to external media, be sure to check the software that comes with it. Seagate, WD and other backup utilities are sufficient for a user with an average level of computer skills.

Backup files: If you only want to copy files, these programs usually work quite quickly (the operating system and software can be reinstalled, although this is labor-intensive and can be time-consuming). Some programs allow you to automatically select files if you use Windows library folders.

Image backup: The image is a representation of your entire hard drive (usually without empty sectors) or partitions, and can be used to recover both the operating system and data. The image is the most convenient way to recover in the event of a system failure, and also ensures that you do not miss any important information.

Boot disk: In case of a complete system failure, you need an alternative resource to boot the recovery system. Any backup program should be able to create a bootable optical disc or USB flash drive. Some of them will also create a recovery partition on your hard drive, which can be used if the hard drive is still working.

Schedule: If you want to have an up-to-date copy of your data, you need to schedule a backup process. Any decent backup program should offer this feature.

Versioning: If you are overwriting a previous file, then such a process cannot be called a backup (it is rather creating a mirror). Any program should allow you to store multiple copies. The best solution is software that allows you to make backups based on the criteria you specify.

Optical support: Every backup program supports hard drives, but as they seem outdated, DVDs and Blu-Rays make great archival media. If you're worried about the reliability of optical media, M-Disc claims its discs are reliable for thousands of years.

Online support: An exceptional copy of your data is insurance against force majeure events such as flood, fire and power surges. Online storage services are a great way to maintain an offsite copy of your data. Backing up to Dropbox and the like are great storage solutions.

FTP and SMB/AFP: Backing up to other computers or NAS boxes on your network or in remote locations (like your parent's house) is another way to physically protect your data with a remote or at least physically discrete copy. FTP can be used for offsite, while SMB (Windows and most OS) and AFP (Apple) are good for other PCs or NAS on your local network.

Real time: Real-time backup means that data is backed up as soon as it is changed, often when it is created or saved. This feature is also called creating a mirror and is necessary to save copies of frequently changing information. A copy will not help you recover your data in the event of a leak; in such a case there should be a planned backup.

Continuous Backup: In this case, "continuous" simply means backing up on a tight schedule, usually every 5-15 minutes, rather than every day or week. Use continuous backup for rapidly changing data sets where transfer rates are too slow or processing power is too valuable for real-time backup.

Performance. Most backups run in the background or after hours, so performance isn't a big issue in the consumer space. However, if you are backing up multiple machines or in multiple locations at the same time, or dealing with very large data sets, speed may be an important factor.

How do we test?

We run each program with the different types of backups it is capable of. This largely tests the reliability and compatibility with the equipment. We make copies: an image of approximately 115 GB (two partitions) and an image of approximately 50 GB created from a collection of smaller files and folders. We then mount the images and verify their integrity using the program's recovery functions. We also test bootable USB drives created by programs.

The operating system and the contents of the computer's memory are often subject to changes that can, in certain situations, lead to complete or partial loss of user information and inoperability of the operating system. Especially for this purpose, Windows has added the ability to create a backup copy of the operating system and user data.

However, within the framework of this article, programs that allow you to backup information will be considered. As a rule, their functionality is either comparable to or even superior to the standard Windows backup tool.

Acronis True Image

This is the first program on the list that comes from a renowned developer. Its functionality gives users ample opportunities to work with system and other types of files. In addition to the usual backup of information and system state, here the user can find other useful functions, for example, the ability to create a full clone of a disk, create a bootable drive, establish remote access to a computer via a mobile device, etc.

Backup here can be divided into several types:

  • For the entire computer – all information available on the computer is copied without exception;
  • Copying any individual files, folders, partitions and disks selected by the user in advance.

Backups can be recorded on a computer hard drive, external drive, or flash drive. The full paid version also gives users access to a cloud developer service where backups can be saved. The amount of free space in the cloud depends on the type of license you purchased.

Backup4all

This program is more adapted for inexperienced PC users, as it has training materials and a built-in wizard for backing up data. It makes working with the program very easy, as it provides instructions for the most common cases, and all you have to do is follow them. However, if you need to perform some unusual task and/or set professional settings, then the wizard can be removed for a while.

The program also provides extensive settings for automating the process. For example, you can set files to be copied automatically at a specified time. This is a very useful feature if you are constantly backing up information at a certain frequency. By setting it up once, you can save a lot of time than if you constantly make manual backups.

APBackUp

APBackUp is a simple program that will help you quickly set up and launch a backup of the required folders, files or disk partitions. The setting wizard is responsible for assisting with the preliminary steps that the user performs. The desired parameters are set in it, and the backup starts.

Additionally, APBackUP has the ability to configure parameters responsible for editing a task. All settings can be adjusted individually to suit you. The program also provides support for external archivers, which are necessary for creating backup archives. If you frequently archive copies of your data, it is recommended that you spend a little time configuring your archiving settings. In the future, these settings will be applied automatically for each subsequent archiving.

Paragon Hard Disk Manager

Until recently, this program from Paragon had a different name - Backup & Recovery. But in the latest versions, the functionality has expanded significantly by adding additional operations for working with hard drives. Now it is impossible to say that this program is used solely for creating and restoring backups, so the developer decided to rename it Hard Disk Manager. In it you can find all the tools for creating backups, restoring data from copies, merging or dividing hard disk volumes.

This program is paid and includes several paid subscription options. However, on the official website you can download a free version for review, the functionality of which is not reduced, therefore, even with its help you can make a backup of the operating system and/or user data.

ABC Backup PRO

ABC Backup Pro differs from the programs discussed above only in its interface. It also has a built-in wizard for creating projects, where the user adds files, configures archiving settings, and makes any additional settings. When archiving, you can also configure encryption settings for the archive using the Pretty Good Privacy feature.

ABC Backup Pro has a tool that allows you to run various programs before and after the processing process. It also specifies whether to wait for the program to close or to copy at a specified time. Additionally, in this software, all actions are saved in log files, so you can always view events.

Macrium Reflect

With this program, the user can back up data in the Windows 7 (and higher) interface and restore it if necessary. The procedure here is simplified as much as possible: you need to select the element whose backup copy is being created (section, folder, file), and then specify the location where the backup copy will be stored. You may also need to configure additional settings and start the job process.

Among the additional functionality, the program provides the user with the opportunity to clone disks, enable protection of disk images from being edited by someone else, and run a file system check for integrity and errors. This program is distributed entirely on a paid basis, but you can download a free demo version on the official website, although its functionality will be slightly reduced.

EaseUS Todo Backup

Unlike previously discussed programs, this program allows you to back up the entire Windows 7 in two clicks, and then also quickly start restoring the system from the backup. This copy can be recorded on some separate media (flash drive or disk), and then inserted into the computer if suddenly a critical failure occurs in Windows, due to which the system refuses to start.

As for other aspects, this program does not have any special differences from its analogues. In the EaseUS Todo Backup arsenal you can find an automatic timer for starting a task, the ability to perform backups in several ways, and setting up copying and cloning of hard drive volumes.

Iperius Backup

Here, backup is performed using a built-in wizard, which tells the user what and how to do in order to get this or that result. Iperius Backup has all the necessary tools to save a backup and restore it if necessary.

Within the framework of this article, all the main backup programs were reviewed. Today on the Internet you can find many programs that provide similar functionality, but there is no point in describing them all in one article, since the functionality and operating features are the same in most cases.

Modern software manufacturers offer many solutions for backup and further recovery of data on a PC. Moreover, the functionality of such applications can be quite wide - the choice of media and copying methods is sometimes amazing. To choose the most suitable application for your own needs, it is worth studying in more detail programs for system backup and recovery.

Selecting a backup program.

MBRtool is a tool that allows you to create backup copies of the main MBR (Master Boot Record). Thanks to this, you can easily protect against the unpleasant effects of MBR corruption, such as data loss on your hard drive.

The Master Boot Record contains the boot loader and any data needed to start the hard drive. This structure is located in the first sector of the hard drive. Data corruption in this sector causes the hard drive to become immobile. Of course, Windows does allow you to MBR. However, this requires the ability to use the System Recovery Console, which cannot be invoked by less advanced computer users. Moreover, unfortunately, this is not always effective. Therefore, it is much easier to create a backup copy of the main boot sector. The program is very easy to use. Once launched, the user can choose how to save the backup. You can choose floppy disk, CD/DVD or hard disk. For security reasons, it is best to save a copy to a floppy disk or disk. Further use of the program should also not be difficult. More advanced computer users can control the program via the command line.

The program can also be used through the standard menu, which is recommended for users with lower skills. Moreover, MBRtool also allows you to edit the contents of the main boot sector. This allows you to add custom captions or change section attributes. A full description and instructions for using the program, unfortunately, are only in English can be found on the manufacturer’s website.

Comodo BackUp is one of the best backup programs. Using a product from the well-known network security and protection company Comodo is a good way to create a reasonable copy of files and protect against sudden media failure. The program allows you to fully automate this process, offering greater ease of use due to the large number of options.

Comodo BackUp has very simple operation and a simple, intuitive interface. Individual settings are grouped into categories, and built-in predefined profiles allow you to quickly backup email, browser data, computer game recordings, user folders, music, images, videos and documents. Comodo BackUp also has a wide range of features useful for more advanced computer users. It is worth paying attention to the creation of backup copies, the ability to compare files, descriptions and version control. Administrators will find it useful to create scripts that make it easier to synchronize operations such as backup, restore, and copy mounting.

The tool allows you to set up password protection or integration with Windows Explorer. Data can be easily uploaded to an FTP server, anywhere from a network environment, or to an external COMODO server (just set up a free account). It is also possible to burn data to optical media (such as CD or DVD), which will be saved in a ZIP archive or as a CD image in ISO format. Data can also be encrypted with one of your chosen algorithms, installed as a virtual disk and synced across multiple locations. The program is distributed under a free license. Comodo BackUp also has an automatic update mechanism and an extensive tooltips system that makes it easy to navigate through individual windows.

Restore Point Creator allows you to view, create, describe and delete Windows restore points, as well as undo changes made to the system. You can schedule points to be created and deleted regularly on selected days and times. The program allows you to decide when and how to delete old restore points, and whether it needs to be done at all. Windows automatically removes the dots, but in some cases this causes the list to be completely cleared and the user has no control over it. The tool has a special option - delete old recovery settings, which deletes the registry section responsible for automatically deleting old points. In addition, the application allows you to manage the disk space allocated for saving points, as well as a preview of the total, free and used space on storage media.

Restore Point Creator is a simple program, and even less advanced users should not have any problems using it. The tool can be successfully used as an alternative to Windows System Restore, since it offers more structured access to identical functions and protects against automatic deletion of important system restore points.

IMPORTANT. For normal operation of the program, the .NET Framework version 4.0 or higher is required.

FavBackup is a small application for backing up web browser related data from FavBrowser Team. The completed backup contains frequently visited bookmarks for favorite websites, history of visited or downloaded files, installed add-ons, saved passwords and sessions, cookies, search queries and, most importantly, browser settings. Creating a copy is very simple: select a browser in the program window, select what you want to save, select a directory to save the file. The backup data is restored in the same way, for example, after reinstalling the browser. It should be emphasized that it is also possible to restore selected items, for example only bookmarks and history.

This tool supports the most popular browsers in both old and new versions. These are Internet Explorer 6-8, Firefox 2-4, Chrome 1-6 (unofficially, possibly newer versions), Opera 9-10, Safari 3-4, Flock 2-2.5. An additional feature of the program that is useful for Opera 10 users is the so-called profile conversion. It includes changes to a copy of the profile so that it can be moved, for example, from Windows XP to Windows 7, in which browser settings are saved in different places. FavBackup has a nice interface modeled after the so-called Ribbon, mostly known from the Microsoft Office 2007/2010 suite. There are three color options to choose from. What's more, there's no need to install the app - just unzip the downloaded ZIP file and then run the EXE file. The program is ready to work immediately.

It is up to the users to decide which of these programs is the best. More detailed information about the products and detailed instructions for using the software can be found on the websites of the software manufacturers.

I"ve tried many backup applications over the years. Cobian, Comodo to name a couple. Though those are very good, freeware solutions. I must admit that after trying FBackup, this one is the best I"ve ever used. It is also very powerful and unique as far as backup software is concerned.

DarrenWalker (Fileforum)

Very useful piece of software for any user. Simple to use and easily backups your files and protects from corruption. I recommend this to anyone looking for a simple and easy to use software for backing up their important files. It"s free so it means you don"t pay for anything.

Have used this software both for back up and more importantly for restore. It worked as advertised. It was simple and worked well. It has saved me now twice when a bad motherboard took out the hard drives in raid mirror setup. I like the better package now due to the greater range of ability.

Breebree (Fileforum)

Easy to use and able to specify just what is to be backed up. I have it set up to do 7 different jobs, Videos, Documents, Music, Desktop, Outlook and Photos. Options of "zip, mirror and full" backup formats provide flexibility when capacity constraints are a factor.

HjHarris (Download.com)

A complete, easy to use, reliable and versatile backup application at last. I was impressed by FBackup after trying (and uninstalling) so many others. FBackup does all the things I want to be done, so it"s here to stay. Recommended!

Nicholas (Fileforum)

Amazingly full-featured for a free program. Broad capabilities, including all the "standard" backup options, but with many more features that the competition holds out for paid upgrades only. It took awhile to find FBackup among all the tools out there, but it was worth the extra searching.
