With this article I want to continue the topic of preventing eye fatigue and visual impairment among computer scientists, since it has become more and more pressing over the years.

Even if you have a good computer monitor, a well-organized workplace (lighting, optimal temperature and humidity, special computer chair and table, etc.), this still does not guarantee you the absence of vision problems in the future. Why? Yes, because a key role in the prevention of eye diseases is played by the correct regime of visual work, which involves regular breaks in work for rest and performing simple eye exercises that restore the functionality of the eyes.


Most people understand the need to adhere to a certain work and rest schedule, but for various reasons they do not do this. Some people are hampered by laziness, others by forgetfulness. Many people are too busy and/or untrained in managing their time. In this case, you can use special computer programs.


There are many computer reminder programs that help you adhere to a certain work and rest schedule. In this article I will talk about one of them, called Workrave.

If you have installed at least one computer program yourself in your life, then you will not have any problems installing Workrave. The program is free and does not require any keys during installation. Workrave supports many languages, and the language of your operating system is automatically detected. After starting the program, a small window appears containing 3 types of timers:




The middle timer displays the time remaining until a full break (by default - 10 minutes), during which the program suggests doing a short warm-up consisting of 10 exercises for the eyes, neck and upper shoulder girdle. Nowadays, it is difficult to imagine a person’s life without a computer. We spend a lot of time at the computer, first at work, then at home reading e-books, playing or surfing the Internet in search of interesting information.

But staying in front of a monitor for a long time is fraught with eye fatigue, and as a result, vision deterioration.

In 1998, American scientists introduced a new medical term - computer vision syndrome.

Computer vision syndrome is characterized by the following symptoms:

  • burning in the eyes;
  • pain in the forehead and eye sockets;
  • feeling of “sand” under the eyelids;
  • redness of the eyes;
  • blurred vision;
  • fatigue when reading;
  • seeing double.

You can avoid such troubles in various ways:

  • use the computer as little as possible, symptoms of the syndrome usually occur after 4-6 hours of being at the computer;
  • take breaks, best every 30-40, lasting 5-15 minutes;
  • do exercises to relieve fatigue and tension from the eyes.

Examples of exercises.

  • close your eyes tightly for a few seconds / open your eyes, repeat several times;
  • roll your eyes in a circle, first clockwise, then counterclockwise, do 5-6 times;
  • stand in front of the window with your hand extended in front of you, with your finger raised up, focus your gaze on the tip of your finger, look at a distant object outside the window, do 10-15 times.

  • crosses appearing first alternately in each of the corners, then in the center of the screen;
  • a flickering circle moving around a circle;
  • a flickering circle moving along the sides of the rectangle.

This program, in my opinion, has two drawbacks - it is an English-language interface and the fact that the user can interrupt the break by pressing Escape.
