The beacon implements checking and protection against entering incorrect time or date parameters. The clock has a non-volatile memory and is retained when the power is turned off. After the power supply is restored, they resume running from the stopping point (with an error of ±10 minutes). When communication with satellites is established, the time is automatically adjusted and the beacon will send a message to the owner.

To monitor movements, it is necessary to ensure that the device is automatically connected to the monitoring server at the moment the ignition is activated and the signal is broadcast until the end of the trip:

  1. Connect the positive power supply terminal to the ignition switch.
  2. Send the text message “**** POWER – A M+” to the beacon.
  3. Wait for a response notification with the following text: “External power: beacon is constantly active, monitoring.” To configure external power parameters, it is permissible to use shortened versions of the POWER or Power commands with the addition of parameter values. It is recommended to operate the beacon in activation mode once a day, which theoretically will increase the battery life to two years. The capacity is enough to carry out 500 sessions of connection with satellites with data transmission over the cellular network. This parameter can be used to independently calculate the battery life.

When operating the device in low temperature conditions (below minus 25 ºС), the natural decrease in battery capacity should be taken into account. At certain moments, communication gaps and lack of messages from the beacon are possible. When the temperature rises, the operating mode is restored.

Activation and deactivation of the alarm mode

To enable the alarm mode, several commands can be used:

  2. Remove the batteries.
  3. Press the activation button and reinsert the batteries. The control diode should turn on.
  4. Release the button until the diode turns off, which goes out and turns on again after two seconds.

  7. Set new operating parameters.

    EXPLOITATION.
    In order to use an accelerated method to draw a conclusion about the quality of the Satellite signal reception - during testing, I configured the StarLine M15 beacon to go on air every hour, while the beacon had to determine the coordinates and send an SMS message in a convenient way for checking on the phone format - with a link to a map with the received coordinates. At the same time, it was immediately located in places that were quite difficult to receive Satellite signals - where it showed confident work in determining GPS coordinates where at one time the StarLine M11 beacon could not cope. And even if GPS coordinates were not determined somewhere, the beacon quite accurately determined the coordinates from the base stations of GSM networks.

    Additionally, during this accelerated test, the correct operation of the motion sensor was checked, in case the StarLine M15 beacon is not used as a GPS bookmark in its pure form, and not only search functions are required, but also some security ones. So, when you turn on the motion sensor and adjust its sensitivity, you can also receive a simplified alarm function from the beacon - a notification to your phone about unauthorized movement of a controlled object.

    But we should not forget that activating a motion-based beacon leads to a reduction in the number of communication sessions over a given period - and as a result, the total operating time of the device as a bookmark on batteries alone is reduced. So, for example, with the configured communication period - 2 times a day (every 12 hours) - a trip to work and back will cause another 2 wake-ups of the beacon - as a result of which the operating time of the beacon without changing batteries will be reduced by almost 2 times.

    As a result, within 9 days with a period of 1 hour and additional waking up due to movement, the StarLine M15 beacon on one set of batteries made about 250 communications with determining coordinates and sending SMS messages. Those. we can say that this is the minimum number of communication sessions that a given beacon can make without replacing batteries, because one of the most energy-intensive operating modes was turned on - if the StarLine M15 beacon is used purely as a GPS bookmark and configured to go on air in standby mode with an SMS command to switch to the active search mode, then due to the disabled GPS module, the consumption and resource will be significantly reduced The batteries will last for more wakeups and broadcasts.

    In general, the StarLine M15 beacon in operation proved to be a completely reliable device, without obvious glitches or comments. What is especially noteworthy is the simple and intuitive setup, which will allow you to quickly prepare the device for operation. I was also very pleased with the fact that during testing, the StarLine M15 beacon showed good accuracy in the operation of software alarms and there was no running forward or backward; actual communication was not observed, as in previous models. This is a rather pleasant little detail, indicating the stability of the device and allowing you to count on it, rather than waiting for a catch at the most crucial moment - when your car is already in the hands of thieves.

    Data transmission is carried out via GPRS channel and is carried out to a special monitoring service. The user can log into it via a computer or phone and monitor the movement of the car online. When transmitting information to the server, the power consumption of power supplies will be higher. Therefore, it is recommended to connect the “beacon” to an external battery.

    Operating modes of the M17 Starline GPS beacon

    The anti-theft security device can operate in two modes - normal and alarm. Depending on this, the main parameters of the “beacon” operation are determined.

    Normal

    In this state, the device spends most of its time in sleep mode. The beacon is pre-configured to turn on at certain hours when a communication session begins. When activated, the installed “gadget” will send information about the coordinates of the vehicle to the car owner’s number. The user independently configures the time interval, which can range from 1 to 30 days.

    Features of normal mode:

    • battery power is consumed more economically;
    • There is the possibility of hidden installation and connection of a beacon - external batteries and accumulators are not required to power the device.

    Alarm mode

    In this state, the “beacon” is always in touch. Thanks to this, the car owner can send a message to the device at any time and receive a response. If the beacon operates in alarm mode, then the charge of its built-in batteries may last for no more than 2 weeks. Therefore, in this case, it is recommended to connect the M17 Starline GPS tracker to the car battery.

    How to install correctly?

    The likelihood of attackers finding and disabling the beacon will decrease if it is installed in the most unexpected and hidden place. It is not recommended to trust the installation of the device to third-party service centers; according to safety rules, the installation of the GPS tracker must be done by yourself.

    Rules for installing a beacon:

    • the module must be placed with the lid facing up;
    • the housing of the control unit should not be covered with metal products or metallized tint film, otherwise the signal quality will decrease;
    • it is possible to install the device under interior trim elements, in particular door trims;
    • it is necessary to ensure that it will not be exposed to moisture or high temperatures;
    • it is advisable to provide additional protection for the terminal block with wires;
    • Do not install the module near the air ducts of the heating system;
    • The installation location of the control unit must be checked for stable communication with satellites;
    • To prevent an attacker from intercepting a signal using a nonlinear locator, the “beacon” should be placed next to the standard electronic module.

    Device connection:

    1. The wire in black insulation is designed to connect the negative signal to the vehicle's electrical network.
    2. The red sheathed cable is used for connection with the positive terminal. The device can be powered from the car's electrical network, designed for 12-24 volts.
    3. The blue cable is for connecting an additional output signal. If you are connecting an alarm or power unit blocking relay, it must be taken into account that the maximum current should be no more than 0.2 A.
    4. The green contact is designed to transmit pulses from external equipment to the device.

    When connecting the M17 Starline GPS tracker, you cannot use external power sources whose voltage is less than 9 or more than 33 V.

    Step-by-step instruction

    Installation Guide:

    1. The instrument cluster is being removed. It is recommended to install the M17 control unit behind it as in the most hidden place.
    2. The decorative trim of the interior is being dismantled. If necessary, the facing elements of the air duct are removed.
    3. A “beacon” is installed in a free space.
    4. The module is connected to the standard wiring cables.
    5. The device is fixed in the seat. It is better not to use double-sided tape; it is more important to use plastic ties.

    Setting up a beacon

    Before operation, you need to make sure that the device is connected correctly, so the beacon should be turned on. When activated, the LED indicator on the device’s body will light up.

    When initially adjusting parameters, the following commands are used:

    Setting the owner number

    To complete the task of setting a phone number, a message is sent with the text “1234+” or “1234+ХХХХХХХХХХ”, where “1234” is the PIN code and “ХХХХХХХХХХ” is the phone number. In response to the command you will receive information about successful binding.

    Operating mode selection

    Algorithm for selecting a GPRS operating mode:

    1. A message with the text “1234I” is sent to the beacon number.
    2. The “gadget” will begin synchronization to work with the cellular operator.
    3. To ensure that the parameter is activated, use the command “1234I?”.

    To assign a normal operating mode, you must send SMS “1234-” or “1234NORMAL”. To enable the audio control function, the message “1234C” is transmitted.

    Request to determine coordinates

    To receive notification about the location of the car, use the following commands:

    1. The password for access is sent in an empty message. Information about the coordinates of the vehicle will be transmitted in a standard format.
    2. If you need to receive data in expanded form, you must send the command “1234#” or “1234FULL”.

    Setting up motion notification

    You can control the motion notification mode by sending a message with the text “1234D+”. To change this parameter, use the command “1234D SM 60”. It is possible to send a command in Russian, then the text will be “1234D SM 60”.
